"I enjoy working in many mediums, but wood is the one I always return to. I love the look and feel of wood and enjoy the endless possibilities it allows. Finding new ways to employ the use of wood is a never-ending joy."
A native Montanan, Nathan grew up in a secluded canyon surrounded by wilderness about a mile off the county road and nine miles from the small town of Saint Ignatius with his parents and sister. Many of his interests are outdoors: fly fishing, hiking and camping, and snowboarding. "Growing up in the mountains has given me a connection to nature. The forms and beauty of nature inspire me. The flowers, animals, and landscapes of the Montana wilderness nudge my imagination in new directions. Nature has been my classroom and back yard, literally."
Nathan began building furniture professionally at the age of fourteen. Over the next few years, he started learning to carve from his father. They collaborated on projects and art pieces together now. A special interest of his was turning pieces on the lathe and embellishing them with carvings and paintings.
His goal as an artist is to make pieces of art that are pleasant and functional. Lately he has been combining his woodworking with other art mediums, including glass, paints, metals, and ceramics.
Nathan's interests have led him hiking , kayaking, and exploring across the west from southern Baja in Mexico to sailing among the islands of British Columbia and in the Florida keys. A trip to Germany and France inspired him greatly. These travels are reflected in his artistic endeavors as well. In 2009 he married Heidi Hagen, and spent 4 years living in Colorado. He and his wife moved back to Montana in 2013. He currently lives in Missoula and tries to get into the wilderness whenever possible.
